Random observations on my recent religion polls/discussions
1) Distribution of poll responses for the 10 people (other than myself) who responded to my "religion rant" as compared to the overall distributions for each question. Evidently the responders are a more representative sample of the people on my friends list than I'd initially perceived. I'd expected a stronger non-theist skew.

2) Why is it that people of multiple religions are willing to claim just about any religion other than Islam?

3) Jewish Pagans (or perhaps Pagan Jews)? Evidently there are two who responded to the polls. Interesting stuff. Hadn't heard of that combo before.

I'm not Jewish, but I understand the appeal of Pagan/Jew combination. A lot of Jews feel tied to the community and traditions of Judaism even though they don't subscribe to its metaphysics or all of its rules. Disaffected Jews find in Paganism a structure for ritual, symbolism, and community with folks who are more orthopractic than orthodox. Jewitchery has a home page and a mailing list. I even wrote and led a Wiccan-style ritual with Jewish themes for my birthday one year.

As for Muslims, selection bias probably plays a large role. Of the people who read your polls, several "Grew up X, but like Y as well (or instead)." Did any readers of your poll grow up Muslim?

Also RE: Pagan Jews, Modern Reformed Judaism (as opposed to Orthodox, Conservative, Progressive, Chassidic, etc) is, imo and ime, an inherently syncretistic religion; thus there are a plethora of 'BuJews' (Buddhist Jews), 'Jewitches' (Pagan/Wiccan Jews), and pretty much anything else you can come up with.

I seriously considered Islam for a moment, but for reasons I thought it would be too complicated and boring to go into.

Jeudaism and Paganism actually fit relatively well, depending on your definition of Paganism. and Judeism. :)

I know a pagan who has both strong Muslim and Hindu leanings.

I don't know enough about Islam (theologically) to claim it yet.

I'd entirely forgotten about Sufism. I also forgot Jainism. Tsk.
